AP Chemistry
The Science Department encourages students to expand their horizons by using a multi-disciplinary approach consisting of earth science, biology, chemistry, physics, forensic science, and anatomy and physiology. It emphasizes the significance of critical thinking, logical reasoning, and data analysis through hands-on learning. This department aims to inspire the future generation to pursue careers in STEM fields.
BIOLOGY
Our year-long biology course is the foundation of our science curriculum. It focuses on the knowledge and exploration/ application of the fundamental principles of life. It is taught in a transitional approach that combines a wide variety of learning styles and requires students to think about HOW they learn best and what skills they can strengthen to increase their academic success across the fields of study. There are a number of hands-on activities and labs to deepen understanding and allow for the application of biological concepts. It is a Regents preparatory course that culminates with the NY State Living Environment Regents Exam. The following topics will be taught: biochemistry, cells, DNA/genetics, human body systems, evolution, and ecology.
CHEMISTRY
This course teaches students how to apply the principles of chemistry on a regents level to adequately prepare them for the chemistry regents. It is also a foundation course for AP chemistry. The following topics will be covered: atomic structure, the mathematics of formulas and equations, physical behavior of matter, the periodic table, bonding, kinetics and equilibrium, oxidation-reduction reactions, acids, bases, and salts, nuclear chemistry and organic chemistry.
EARTH SCIENCE
Earth Science is a laboratory-oriented course emphasizing the analysis of the geophysical processes that mold our earth. Some of the important topics covered are: plate tectonics, geology, and meteorology. Students enrolled in Regents level Earth Science will be expected to hypothesize, interpret, analyze, evaluate data, and apply their scientific knowledge to real world situations. Students are required to participate in laboratory activities, complete lab reports, and take the NYS Earth Science Regents Exam.
