it has been over 80 years that st. James has been educating young women to such an extent of high success nationally 74% of female high school students enroll in college here in same genes 100% of our students enrolling College given the diversity of our student body this is something unique and special we all should be very proud of internships and all the classes like the AP courses and honors classes I love what they offer hear anything that could give me that edge to get into a great college cuz that's all I want to do I want to go to a College I have a great future we've had wonderful experiences at Cooper Union in this summer stem program we've had medical internships at Weill Cornell and Lenox Hill have participated in a program the video Museum of the Jewish Museum to Museum of Art and Design the new Museum the Queens museum the Whitney and also at the American Museum of Natural History we have a graduate currently mentoring a student at the studio Museum in Harlem so that when I went to the exhibition and saw them both there is a real street that had some experiences in the text Fields with Google and Amazon go down in the Museum of Natural History we go and rest morphology and about walking in humans and ancient history and all that stuff and it's amazing it opens your eyes and two different careers a few weeks ago I had the opportunity to go to NYU langone and they talk to us about all the different medical fields and then they talked about nursing and I was like well I don't really want to be a nurse but then pediatrician came along and I was like that's what I want to do I want to be a pediatrician it was a great experience to actually talk to real life doctors and text Brandon what they've been through route to get the weather right now and it somehow gone from nothing to something which is first firing the number of our students over the last few years I've been at internship send a 10 his office to get a sense of what the legal procedure we've also had a student who was accepted to the Sonia Sotomayor judicial program in the courts of the Bronx she herself was a Hispanic student and so it was just a very fine experience for her and I believe has led her to consider law as a pet Career Education is not only about passing on knowledge to our students but it's about giving our students the tools to find out who they are and what kind of difference that they can make in their world power push for them to really expand beyond the neighborhood beyond the school has provided a lot of opportunity and I think ultimately when we speak to our graduates I think it has paid off in the circulatory system of the stuff called spinal fluid I was a Navy medic before I got my degree in biology with my medical background I recently had the opportunity to take place in some research with the hospital part of the research was to have an MRI they gave me my images and I immediately I brought him to school and I showed the students look guys this is my brain this is this is what's inside proof there is a brain inside this head it was an opportunity to take a step away from this is what you have to know to this is what you get to know this is what you can know if you want to know about it hopefully it's Parks the interests it up of some of my students that are thinking about careers in medicine or careers in even you know Tech hrimaging everybody's got their fitness trackers so what you should have seen as a pattern in how your heart rate throughout the day what does that information tell us and that's a critical thinking peace that I want my students develop more seconds there's such a need for different perspectives in science and whether those are female perspectives or minority perspectives science for too long has been in the hands of a select group of people unless we get girls interested in science they're not going to pursue it I try to bring in the outside world and say these are the opportunities that are out there when I grow up I want to be a pediatrician I want to be a biomedical engineer when I grow up I want to be a OBGYN doctor what else would be the art programs here I really appreciate how well develop everything. and how many materials and Equipment they had and how much dedication to our teacher had to helping us build our portfolios show I think more and more work are be an integral part of the careers that our students will be pursuing their going to be required to collaborate with co-worker they're going to be required to think the Virgin Lee they're going to need those analytical thinking skills in the same way that I would look at a painting do you know to look for clues about what that painting is about I do love expressing myself creatively whether it's writing or art so it really gives me the opportunity to sit there and say I'm just going to pick up some paint today and I'm going to express my for the past five years we've had many students win Scholastic art Awards the gold medal winners have their Works displayed at the Met every year and that's certainly quite an achievement to think that you could be at the Metropolitan when you're in high school we have great facilities so we have two accounts we have an intaglio printing press we have a 3D printer so the students work with both traditional media as well as more contemporary media like the 3D printer girls will be with a sense of how to create their own our work in a meaningful way and also analyze our work and hopefully appreciate our work for the rest of their lives. Rochambeau the same genes are sports programs are special they're not just about building great. they're about building great female student-athletes there about women becoming leaders and women learning to collaborate and work within a team Athletics program that we have that same genes include soccer softball track cross-country running and I never end up doing fencing at all so it was a new experience for me there certainly aren't that many fencers from our area so it who makes the girls standout it makes their application stand out it's something really unique that we offer dancing you have to be on the minute you're off your ported everything has been at Central Park Monday after school we practice with the lot of drills we were on for 2 minutes straight it's amazing just like you're on the field and you can look up at any given point you can see if they like the taxis and you see everyone around us very strongly last year we got the playoffs in the year before that we placed third I believe I've been I'm communicating with college coaches the other teammates they really were fun and I really enjoyed being around them so it was more about being in their presence but now I also enjoy track to we have to really amazing coaches but you push us to do our very eyes. Each and every day all of our coaches are faculty members which gives us a wonderful opportunity we know all of our students super well so weak really focus on our student-athletes strength I feel like it's better to have someone let you know coaching you there's someone from outside because you feel like you can come to the house and see if you're not doing so well they always help you and they have like a sort of connection with you remember that when you play soft st.james you became sisters with 12 girls you never knew before and somehow you became successful or somehow you fail together and you got up together and became successful and I think that that translates into your first job into your college Santa how do I get along with others how do I get along with people that come from a different background for me or see things differently than I do and become successful together SUV on three one two three a scholarship at Saint jeans and a Saint James education can really change a person's life send me your photo wasn't for my scholarship at Sav I will probably be in public school and pushes me to do better in my studies my mom she didn't get an opportunity like I have but she wants a public school didn't offer a lot of opportunities for her to excel in life so I'm glad I can't get out of I got black and show her that I can be something more scholarship reminds me of so much and of how much my parents couldn't have and how much I could have and how much I could help them the future needs about $400,000 every year to cover the car scholarships both at need-based and merit-based I'm not sure that all of these programs could actually happen I'm always thinking about new opportunities for the girl so for example I'm hoping to do a thin glass component when we do a lab it requires materials and we don't always get to use those materials again and coaches on board there's a stipend involved in cost a lot of money uniforms cost money equipment cost money and it's so important to the girls are sand dollars Saint James is able to continue its Mission because of the generosity of the fathers of the Blessed Sacrament the congregation of Notre Dame and the generosity of our donors investing in igknight is not just investing in an individual students and their future it's really invest can a person their family and the community that they come from my grandma and my uncle and my two cousins my grandmother takes care of me and my my mom works in Global Security at a pharmaceutical company but then on the sides he also works and Catering for college graduation for my dad works day and night shift no experience dogs for the medication is everything because they didn't have that and so they want their children to have the best than to succeed and to have a good future and a good profession in a graduate go on to college and into the workforce are working to make a difference and change the world they live in a I would like to give a very very big thank you because without them I wouldn't be able to get such a great education thanking for bleeding giving back we all have motivation to continue our education and we all want to but I just feel like if you were able to give to us we're just going to make you feel good for thank you very much you have open the door for me that my family might have not been able to open and you made me feel that someone else who didn't really know me could be given language personal to believe in myself the difference different opportunities to continue our future to consider what we want to do fun for homeless women and it really was touched me because it's to the woman that don't have the luxuries and so because of the owners who sponsored the school we were able to help those woman if I will become the first generation to go into college and be part of my first generation to graduate college and my entire family go to my family stay started After High School some didn't finish High School I would be the first high school graduate and my family and actually all the female generations and I'll be the first one to go to college and graduate so it's Otto's first riding on my back and my family thank you for inspiring me and thank you for getting me the opportunities to complete my future and to do this for someone else one day I would love to become a sponsor one day and do the same thing or someone else that someone did for me
